Hawa Mahal Typography
2024

Typography
The project delves into modular typography inspired by the architectural wonder of Hawa Mahal in Jaipur, India. Using five simple modules inspired by the pillars of Hawa Mahal, the aim was to dissect the intricate design of the palace and distill its essence into a set of typographic expressions.

Through meticulous exploration and iterative design processes, the project sought to capture the elegance of simplicity within complex structures. The result reflects a harmonious relationship between architecture and typography, celebrating the beauty found in minimalism and the art of building from basic shapes.

Hawa Mahal and the  Inspired Typography

The Typeset:

The journey involved a meticulous exploration of each letter, experimenting with the arrangement and combination of the five modules. I aimed to capture the essence of Hawa Mahal's architectural allure in every curve and contour of the modular typefaces. Iterative design processes allowed for refinement, ensuring that the final result not only echoed the inspiration but also stood as a testament to the versatility of simple shapes.

Initial Sketches:  When working on modules of modular typography, here are some things I have to work on-

1. Consistency in Module Size: Ensure uniformity in the size of modules to maintain a cohesive and balanced appearance in the typography.

2. Grid Alignment: Pay attention to grid alignment for precise placement of modules. A well-organized grid enhances the overall structure of the typography.

Thoughts & Reflection:  I didn’t see any harmony between my letters. They are alone standing there; they don’t look like the same family. Striving for harmony in the shapes used as modules. Whether circles, squares, or triangles, my aim is for a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing arrangement in the process.

Further Development:

I replaced one of the modules with a pillar-inspired version, just trying to make it simpler, and like my inspiration. Just exploring different shapes such as the rectangular one within the chosen modules. Exploring variations to discover unique and interesting design possibilities and I think it works better this way.

Modules: Ensuring that the chosen modules align with the conceptual goals of the project.

Achieving precise and consistent letterforms requires a lot of attention to detail. Maintaining uniformity in size, spacing, and proportions, the height and width of letters across different letters is challenging but crucial for readability and that's when I realized a lot goes into making typefaces.
